A formula describing the statistical distribution of particles in a system among different energy levels. The number of particles in a given energy level is proportional to exp ( −E/ kT), where E is the energy of the level, k is Boltzmann’s constant, and T is the absolute temperature.

Origin

1920s: named after J. C. Maxwell (see Maxwell, James Clerk) and L. Boltzmann (see Boltzmann, Ludwig).
