An island to the east of the Comoros in the Indian Ocean; population 223,800 (est. 2009); languages, French (official), local Swahili dialect; capital, Mamoutzu. When the Comoros became independent in 1974, Mayotte remained an overseas territory of France. Also called Mahore.
