- (1853–1942), English archaeologist and Egyptologist; full name Sir William Matthew Flinders Petrie. He began excavating the Great Pyramid in 1880. Petrie was the first to establish the system of sequence dating, now standard archaeological practice, by which sites are excavated layer by layer and historical chronology determined by the dating of artefacts found in situ.
