( 1892–1971), Hungarian Communist statesman, First Secretary of the Hungarian Socialist Workers' Party 1945–56 and Prime Minister 1952-3 and 1955-6. After the Communist seizure of power in 1945 he did much to establish a firmly Stalinist regime. He was ousted as Premier by the more liberal Imre Nagy in 1953.
