( 1932–99), US poet, writer, and cartoonist; full name Sheldon Alan Silverstein; also known as Uncle Shelby. He is best known for his children’s stories and poetry such as in The Giving Tree (1964), Where the Sidewalk Ends (1974), A Light in the Attic (1981), and Falling Up (1996).
