A city in European Russia, a port on the River Volga south-east of Nizhni Novgorod; population 607,000 (est. 2008). Between 1924 and 1992 it was called Ulyanovsk, in honour of Lenin (Vladimir Ilich Ulyanov), who was born there in 1870.
