The key monument of Byzantine architecture, originally a church, at Istanbul. Built by order of Justinian and inaugurated in 537, it was converted into a mosque after the Turkish invasion of 1453. In 1935 Atatürk declared it a museum. Also called Hagia Sophia, Santa Sophia.
