( B.1916), Australian Labor statesman, Prime Minister 1972-5; full name Edward Gough Whitlam. Whitlam ended compulsory military service and relaxed the immigration laws. In 1975 he refused to call a general election and became the first elected Prime Minister to be dismissed by the British Crown.
