( 1840–1902), French novelist and critic; full name Émile Édouard Charles Antoine Zola. His series of twenty novels collectively entitled Les Rougon-Macquart (1871–93), including Nana (1880), Germinal (1885), and La Terre (1887), attempts to show how human behaviour is determined by environment and heredity.
