Definition of Zuider Zee in English:

A former large shallow inlet of the North Sea, in the Netherlands. In 1932 a dam across its entrance was completed, and large parts have been drained and reclaimed as polders. The remainder forms the IJsselmeer.

Origin

Dutch, literally 'southern sea'.
