Appleton, Sir Edward Victor

Pronunciation: /ˈap(ə)ltən/
(1892–1965), English physicist. He discovered a region of ionized gases (the Appleton layer) in the atmosphere above the Heaviside or E layer, and won the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1947.
