Arnold, Matthew

Pronunciation: /ˈɑːn(ə)ld/
(1822–88), English poet, essayist, and social critic. In works such as Culture and Anarchy (1869) he criticized the Victorian age in terms of its materialism, philistinism, and complacency. Notable poems: ‘The Scholar Gipsy’ (1853), ‘Dover Beach’ (1867).
