Böll, Heinrich

Pronunciation: /bœl/
(1917–85), German novelist and short-story writer; full name Heinrich Theodor Böll. His years in the German army (1938–44) provided the material for his earliest novel, Adam, Where Art Thou? (1951). His later work, such as The Lost Honour of Katharina Blum (1974), is frequently critical of post-war German society. Nobel Prize for Literature (1972).
