A landlocked country in southern Africa; population 1,990,900 (est. 2009); official languages, Setswana and English; capital, Gaborone.

Inhabited by Sotho people and, in the Kalahari Desert, San (Bushmen), the area was made the British Protectorate of Bechuanaland in 1885. It became an independent republic within the Commonwealth in 1966, adopting the name Botswana.
