(Circa 486-circa 575), Irish abbot. The legend of the ‘Navigation of St Brendan’ (circa 1050), describing his voyage with a band of monks to a promised land (possibly Orkney or the Hebrides), was widely popular in the Middle Ages. Feast day, 16 May.
