Cape Verde Islands

Pronunciation: /ˌkeɪp ˈvəːd ˌʌɪləndz/
A country consisting of a group of islands in the Atlantic off the coast of Senegal, named after the most westerly cape of Africa; population 429,500 (est. 2009); languages, Portuguese (official), Creole; capital, Praia. Previously uninhabited, the islands were settled by the Portuguese from the 15th century. They remained a Portuguese colony until 1975, when an independent republic was established.
