Dana, James Dwight

Pronunciation: /ˈdeɪnə/
(1813–95), American naturalist, geologist, and mineralogist. He founded an important classification of minerals based on chemistry and physics. His view of the earth as a unit was an evolutionary one, but he was slow to accept Darwin’s theory of evolution.
