Dar es Salaam

Pronunciation: /ˌdɑːr ɛs səˈlɑːm/
The chief port and former capital of Tanzania; population 2,930,000 (est. 2007). It was founded in 1866 by the sultan of Zanzibar. Its Arabic name means ‘haven of peace.
