Diophantus

Pronunciation: /ˌdʌɪəˈfantəs/
(Fl. circa 250 ad), Greek mathematician. Diophantus was the first to attempt an algebraical notation, showing in Arithmetica how to solve simple and quadratic equations. His work led to Pierre de Fermat’s discoveries in the theory of numbers.
