( 1834–96), French-born novelist, cartoonist, and illustrator; full name George Louis Palmella Busson du Maurier. He is chiefly remembered for his novel Trilby (1894), which included the character Svengali and gave rise to the word Svengali for a person with a hypnotic influence on another.
