Foucault, Michel

(1926–84), French philosopher; full name Michel Paul Foucault. A student of Louis Althusser, he was mainly concerned with exploring how society defines categories of abnormality such as insanity, sexuality, and criminality, and the manipulation of social attitudes towards such things by those in power.
