(1869–1951), French novelist, essayist, and critic, regarded as the father of modern French literature; full name André Paul Guillaume Gide. Notable works: The Immoralist (1902), La Porte étroite (1909, Strait is the Gate), The Counterfeiters (1927), and his Journal (1939–50). Nobel Prize for Literature (1947).
