A type of needlepoint embroidery consisting of stitches crossing two or more threads of the canvas in each direction.


Mid 19th century: French, literally 'large stitch', from gros point de Venise, a type of lace originally from Venice, worked in bold relief. The current sense dates from the 1930s.
