Definition of half-standard in English:
A tree or shrub that grows on an erect stem of half height and stands alone without support.
- Specimen half-standard fruit trees can be grown as features in the lawn or borders, and mini upright cordons can be grown individually, in small plantations in the borders or in pots for the patio.
- Our tree-plant in Bradford is pathetically timid; from Jacob's Well there is nothing but a sea of tarmac, concrete, slate and stone - and when we do plant, it's only half-standards and not full-size specimens.
- In Centenary Square there are six equally-spaced unexciting trees bordering the shops at one end, and a handful of half-standard, half-size trees at the police station end; with nothing in between.
