A rare green gem variety of spodumene (an aluminosilicate mineral).
- It is well known as a common constituent of what appear to be alpine-cleft-type pockets that locally contain emerald and spodumene (the variety hiddenite) in Alexander County.
- This type of pegmatite, or one closely allied to it, also contains hiddenite as hypidiomorphic crystals within the pegmatite itself.
Late 19th century: named after William E. Hidden (1832–1918), American mineralogist.
