Jackson, Andrew

Pronunciation: /ˈdʒaks(ə)n/
(1767–1845), American general and Democratic statesman, 7th president of the US 1829–37; known as Old Hickory. As president he replaced an estimated 20 per cent of those in public office with Democrat supporters, a practice that became known as the spoils system.
