(1939–2001), African statesman, president of Democratic Republic of the Congo (formerly Zaire) 1997–2001. After his forces overthrew President Mobutu in 1997, Kabila took power and changed the name of the country to the Democratic Republic of Congo. He was assassinated by one of his army officers and was succeeded as president by his son Joseph Kabila (b.1971).
