Liddell, Eric

Pronunciation: /ˈlɪd(ə)l/
(1902–45), British athlete and missionary, born in China; full name Eric Henry Liddell. In the 1924 Olympic Games he won the 400 metres in a world record time. His exploits were celebrated in the film Chariots of Fire (1981).
