Definition of life imprisonment in English:

A long term of imprisonment, which (in the UK) is now the only sentence for murder and the maximum for any crime. It is indeterminate in length, and in practice is rarely for the whole of a criminal’s remaining life.
Example sentences
  • In February 1995 he was convicted of murder and sentenced to life imprisonment.
  • On 4 May 1999 the three defendants were inevitably sentenced to life imprisonment for murder.
  • It is this factor alone which could justify a maximum sentence of life imprisonment.
