Mallarmé, Stéphane

(1842–98), French poet. A symbolist, he experimented with rhythm and syntax by transposing words and omitting grammatical elements. Notable poems: ‘Hérodiade’ (circa 1871) and ‘L’Après-midi d’un faune’ (1876).
