Marquette, Jacques

Pronunciation: /mɑːˈkɛt/
(1637–75), French Jesuit missionary and explorer. Arriving in North America in 1666, he played a prominent part in the attempt to convert the American Indians to Christianity, and explored the Wisconsin and Mississippi Rivers.
