Mazarin, Jules

(1602–61), Italian-born French statesman; Italian name Giulio Mazzarino. Sent to Paris as the Italian papal legate (1634), he became a naturalized Frenchman; he was made a cardinal in 1641 and then chief minister of France (1642).
