A hormone secreted by the pituitary gland that is involved in pigmentation changes in some animals.
- Islet cell tumors also may produce adrenocorticotrophin hormone, melanocyte-stimulating hormone, antidiuretic hormone, norepinephrine, and serotonin.
- Patients with Addison's disease should be treated with mineralocorticoid and glucocorticoid replacement to reduce the drive for excess production of adrenocorticotropic hormone and melanocyte-stimulating hormone.
- Excessive pigmentation can be caused by oversecretion of adrenocorticotrophic hormones and an associated melanocyte-stimulating hormone from the pituitary gland.
