A city and port on the west coast of Italy, capital of Campania region; population 963,661 (2008). It was formerly the capital of the kingdom of Naples and Sicily (1816–60). Italian name Napoli.

Origin

From Latin Neapolis, from Greek neos 'new' + polis 'city'.
