Necker, Jacques

Pronunciation: /ˈnɛkə/
/nɛkɛʀ/
(1732–1804), Swiss-born banker and director general of French finances (1777–81; 1788-9). In 1789 he recommended summoning the States General and was dismissed, this being one of the factors which resulted in the storming of the Bastille.
