An island territory in the South Pacific to the east of Tonga; population 1,400 (est. 2009); languages, English (official), local Austronesian; capital, Alofi. Annexed by New Zealand in 1901, the island achieved self-government in free association with New Zealand in 1974. Niue is the world’s largest coral island.
