Nizhni Novgorod

Pronunciation: /ˌniːʒnɪ ˈnɒvɡərɒd/
A river port in European Russia on the Volga; population 1,274,700 (est. 2008). Between 1932 and 1991 it was named Gorky after the writer Maxim Gorky, who was born there.
