Old Ironsides

Nickname for the frigate Constitution, the oldest commissioned vessel in the US Navy. Launched in 1797, it defeated four British frigates in the War of 1812 and is permanently berthed at the Boston Navy Yard.


Early 19th century: conferred by her crew when, during her first battle with the British vessel Guerrière, the cannon balls glanced off her thick oak hull.
