Orkney Islands

(also Orkney or the Orkneys)
A group of more than seventy islands off the NE tip of Scotland, constituting a council area of Scotland; population 20,100 (est. 2009); chief town, Kirkwall. They came into Scottish possession in 1472, having previously been ruled by Norway and Denmark.
