Owens, Jesse

Pronunciation: /ˈəʊɪnz/
(1913–80), American athlete; born James Cleveland Owens. In 1935 he equalled or broke six world records in 45 minutes, and in 1936 won four gold medals at the Olympic Games in Berlin. The success at the games of Owens, as a black man, outraged Hitler.
