A slow-moving South American cavy-like rodent that has coarse dark hair with white stripes along the back, and a short furry tail.
  • Dinomys branickii, the only member of the family Dinomyidae.
Example sentences
  • Eight other species, including pacas, pacaranas, spiny rats and porcupines, also steal Brazil nuts stored by agoutis.
  • The feet seem to be adapted to digging, but pacaranas are not known as diggers.
