Definition of passepied in English:
A Breton dance similar to a quick minuet, popular in the 17th and 18th centuries.
- Like other dances of rustic origin adopted by the court, the passepied was taken up by composers of stage music, including Lully, Campra, and Rameau.
- The quality of his D minor and B flat major suites, recorded here, is quite breathtaking: the final passepied of that in B flat alone sounds as fresh as if it had just come from Bach's pen.
French, from passer 'to pass' + pied 'foot'.
