The timber of certain Brazilian hardwood trees:
- (white peroba) Timber used for furniture and storage vats, from the tree Paratecoma peroba (family Bignoniaceae). (red peroba) Timber from trees of the genus Aspidosperma (family Apocynaceae), which is similar to white peroba but less versatile.
- The instruments feature mahogany backs, curupay fingerboards and tops carved from Paraguayan hardwoods like peroba.
Early 19th century: via Portuguese from Tupi iperoba, literally 'bitter bark'.
