Severe pain in the muscles between the ribs or in the diaphragm.
- Enteroviruses can cause aseptic meningitis; hand, foot, and mouth syndrome; encephalitis; poliomyelitis; myocarditis; hemorrhagic conjunctivitis; pleurodynia and severe neonatal disease.
- In pleurodynia, fever and muscle pain usually last 1 to 2 days, and in herpangina, symptoms generally last 3 to 6 days.
- Boys with pleurodynia may also have pain in the testicles beginning about 2 weeks after the chest pain starts.
