Pompadour, Marquise de

Pronunciation: /ˈpɒmpədʊə/
(1721–64), French noblewoman; known as Madame de Pompadour; born Jeanne Antoinette Poisson. In 1744 she became the mistress of Louis XV, gaining considerable influence at court, but she later became unpopular as a result of her interference in political affairs.
