Entry from US English dictionary
(also materia prima)
Primeval matter; fundamental substance.
- It's also clearly linked to the prima materia in alchemy: the formless, chaotic substance from which everything is eventually formed and transformed.
- The alchemist task is to somehow separate each different aspect of the prima materia into its own material spectrum of substance.
- Notably, in the Tao te Ching the prima materia is described as unmovable; at the same time, ‘it is capable of being the mother of the world’, so implying that the prima materia binds us to the earth.
