Definition of quit-rent in English:
A rent, typically a small one, paid by a freeholder or copyholder in lieu of services which might be required of them.
- Governor Macquarie sought, for example, to regularise an ad hoc system of land grants by forbidding resale until five years had elapsed, and by instituting a system of quit-rents attaching to land grants.
- If any one buy the field, garden, and house of a chieftain, man, or one subject to quit-rent, his contract tablet of sale shall be broken (declared invalid) and he loses his money.
- Thus in the early years of European settlement in Australia grants of land were made subject to the payment of a ‘quit-rent,’ which notionally recognised the landholder's obligation to the Crown.
