Robeson, Paul

Pronunciation: /ˈrəʊbs(ə)n/
(1898–1976), American singer and actor; full name Paul Bustill Robeson. His singing of ‘Ol’ Man River' in the musical Showboat (1927) established his international reputation. His black activism and Communist sympathies led to ostracism in the 1950s.
