(1920–2010), born Jean-Marie Maurice Scherer, French film director and critic, member of the nouvelle vague. His films, many of which deal with issues of conscience, include My Night at Maud’s (1969), Claire’s Knee (1970), and the costume drama The Lady and the Duke (2001).
