A series of natural steps in a cascade or steeply sloping riverbed, or a similar arrangement incorporated into a dam, allowing salmon to pass upstream.
- The musculature of salmon, after 30 seconds’ swimming flat-out up a salmon ladder or striving to jump a weir, has been reported to touch pH 6.0; warm-blooded animals cannot tolerate this value.
- For instance, limits will be set on fishing for glass eels used in aquaculture, while eel passes, similar to salmon ladders, are to be introduced to lessen the impact of dams and weirs that block upstream migration.
